Its high payload-to-curb-weight ratio, inherent swimming capability, and low maintenance requirements make this vehicle suitable for use as a battery and battalion ammunition resupply vehicle. It may also be used as a prime mover for towed heavy artillery. Commercial earth-moving components have been used wherever practicable. The vehicle is driven by the two front wheels assisted by the rear wheels in low range and reverse. The torque from the engine is transmitted to the front wheels through the transmission while an engine driven alternating current (AC) generator provides power for driving the rear wheels and for steering. Other characteristics include wagon steering which is actuated hydraulically and a propeller shaft which transmits power to the rear wheels.
